Dying Noodles

To dye the noodles, I have previously done it in ziplock bags, but this time I thought it might be fun to stir them around in a bowl. It can be done either way.

Ingredients
1 cup uncooked noodles*
1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol*
10-30 drops food coloring*

Mix the alcohol and 5-6 drops of the food coloring together, stir in the noodles, add more coloring as needed (no more alcohol). When colored as you like, lay the noodles out flat to dry. Because they are dyed with alcohol and not water, they dry very quickly.

For more vibrant colors:
For most of the colors, after they were mostly dry, I threw them into a gallon ziplock bag with a few more drops of food coloring only (no alcohol this time), and rubbed them around. Like a second coat. It enhanced the colors just a little more.

*The amounts of the ingredients are completely subjective, and are what I happened to use today. I have seen recipes with anywhere from a teaspoon of alcohol up to a half cup of it. You can play around and see what works best. Next time I may possibly try it with a little less alcohol initially, but I'm not sure it matters. I personally definitely wouldn't use more than a tablespoon.

What to do with dyed noodles?
1. Use them with Elmer's glue on construction paper for artistic designs.
2. Larger noodles, or noodles with large openings can be used as beads to string necklaces or decorations.

Serving Together

My friend and cousin-in-law Kim inspired me to return to my recently-neglected enjoyment of humanitarian service. As a mom, it's so hard to find "extra" time for such things! Sooo... Kinley and I worked together for a creative afternoon activity!

We colored macaroni noodles to give to the Women and Children in Crisis Shelter for their arts and craft supplies. It was a great experience, very low-key, very cheap, and Kinley is so excited to drop them off at the United Way! We have way too many leftover noodles so we'll be doing this project again soon!

She's holding her nose because she isn't used to the smell of the pungent alcohol.

We successfully made red, orange, and green. Blue came out "ok" but the purple was more of a pukey purpley brown.

What's In A Name?

So, I found this on a friend's blog and had my own name analyzed, way fun! I don't know about the "quite introverted" part, for sure, LOL! But I'm definitely flaky and irresponsible at times! Take the test yourself! Paranoid and jealous for sure, ha ha ha!

More Patience Than He Deserves

Mostly one-sided conversation I overheard:

Kinley: Oh, Tanner, you are so cute. You have such a cute smile, such a cute laugh. You are just the cutest brother in the world!

Tanner: SHRIEK!!!!!

Kinley: Ok. That is not a cute scream.

Tanner: SMACK!!

Kinley: That is not a cute hit...

Kinley is very gracious to this little toddler. This is the same little boy that dumped out many thousands of seed beeds all over the carpet yesterday (thanks, Daddy and Kinley for picking up that mess), and on Saturday peed on his own mother--intentionally.

Teach Your Child To Read

My amazing sister Heather, who is an inspiration in so many many ways, introduced us to this book, modeled by cute cousin Anna. It's called "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons". As a homeschooling mom, Heather has used this book to teach all of her children to read.

Kinley and I are on lesson 62 and I honestly can't rave enough about it. We haven't finished it yet because we keep getting distracted, but we're back on track now and she's loving it even more than ever. I've promised her a Leapster when she finishes the book, plus, she'll have the benefit of being able to read on a 2nd grade level when she's done! She's become the driving force behind reading time these days, so we'll probably actually finish it this time! We call it "the yellow book". "Time to read from my Yellow Book, Mommy!" She is already fully reading paragraphs, including long words like "little" and "fishing". It's so great.

It's a remarkable book, the best $20 I have ever spent. You don't need any supplies or resources other than the book itself, and a parental ability to read pink fonts. :)

It can also be used for older children who are struggling in reading. It's actually not geared specifically toward preschoolers, but if you have one who is ready to read and you're willing to donate 5-15 minutes a day to the cause, give this book a try! If you're a neighbor, come over and look through it!

I will note that we have actually skipped the writing exercises, so we'll have to go back and work on writing our letters a little better when we're done. But she's making progress with that on her own anyway, for fun.

Thank you, Heather! You, as always, are a remarkable resource for great teaching ideas!!

Inheritance

Tanner likes to sleep with stuff in his crib. It doesn't seem to disturb his sleep and I remember sleeping with upwards of 50-60 stuffed animals piled on top of me sometimes, so maybe it's genetic?! I remember very vividly not wanting any of the stuffed animals to feel left out. I couldn't choose just a few because that would hurt the feelings of those who didn't get invited to my bed! Soooo... the only resolution I could come up with was inviting the whole gang to sleep with me!

Oh, how my dad hated it! I remember well the night he had had absolutely enough of the spectacle (I'm sure it was a suffocation hazard), and he told me I could only sleep with one stuffed animal; I think I was about 5. I was devastated. For one thing, I knew that I had to sleep with Teddy every single night. I needed to be allowed at least two, but he said no, probably assuming that 2 would turn to 50 (not an unreasonable assumption, I'll admit).

I was naughty and rebellious even then...

Every night I hid Teddy way down in the covers and then rotated through the remaining 50 or 60 stuffed animals, a different one every night. I remember being so scared that Teddy would be discovered, that my disobedience would be exposed, and knowing my dad just wouldn't understand the complex emotional dynamics of my stuffed animals! Or his daughter for that matter, LOL!

There now, Dad. Now I've confessed. :)

Cousin Fun

We had some good times this morning with some perfectly delightful cousins. I'm sure the kids are cousins of some variety (their fathers are cousins), but I'm not familiar enough with the extended terminologies to know exactly what kind of cousins they are. Maybe Grandma P. can shed some light on it? Anyway, maybe Kim and I are cousins-in-law, or maybe we're just friends. Either way, it was a blast! Sweet, sweet, little pixie-baby Emilie!
Of COURSE Tanner found the cars within minutes of arriving...
Tanner and Nicholas sharing some very entertaining walking, roaring dinosaurs. They shared together pretty well, I thought! Not many tears, and only a few fits from Tanner.
They introduced us to one of their favorite past-times -- playing with shaving cream. Sometimes they put washable paint in the cream, but today it was just white, which was darn fun enough, according to the pictures I was able to get!!

Now, I SHOULD have realized when I saw this look that the wheels were turning, and the Bradshaw kids were about to bring a new intensity to this previously harmless activity...
And, yes, it begins! Within seconds, Tanner decided this was your basic bubble bath at the kitchen table.

Kinley immediately followed suit
And, yes, the whole team is trying out this new and exciting way of playing with shaving cream. How can this NOT be my favorite picture?
This may be the very last picture that will ever be taken of Nicholas playing with shaving cream since it just might be banned forever after this little adventure!! Sorry, little guy! It's all fun and games until the Bradshaw kids show you naughty possibilities! Hosed off in the tub.
Thank you so much! It was so much fun and we can't wait to get together again!

Little Lucky Duck

I thought these pictures were just too cute! Tanner playing Lucky Ducks with his own set of rules.
The ducks are out of the pond, and Winnie the Pooh is going for a dip!!

Coloring Together

Sometimes it's so hard to be a gracious big sister. They are sharing the final giant coloring page. Tanner isn't quite as, um... "detailed" in his coloring techniques. Well... if you can't beat 'em, JOIN 'em!! She decided that coloring a nasty scribble page together wasn't so bad!

Feeding Himself

So that I don't find myself with another 4 year old that can't feed himself, I have decided now is the time to allow him to start trying the messier foods. This week I poured him a bowl of cereal... with MILK. I couldn't watch. I had to go take a shower, which, LOL, was actually kind of nice!

Obstacle Course

We had a great activity this week. Sister Billings is an athletic trainer for many of the campus teams. She was able to give us access to the the gymnastics arena for the evening.

We started with an obstacle course. We broke into relay teams. The first time through the course, we wore heavy backpacks (representing sin), the second time through the course we removed the backpacks, but had to run the course breathing through straws (representing the difficulties imposed on our bodies by breaking the Word of Wisdom). For the third and final race through the course, the participants ran unencumbered, and had faster times, even though they were tired.

Then one of our illustrious YW shared an inspiring message and her testimony of the things we had experienced, clearly outlining the comparison between gospel living and running an obstacle course.
Taking a rest. It was hard work!

Sister Myers dominated the courses all three times! You rock, Sister Myers!
Sister Ranson is a closet gymnast! She was a gymnast in her youth, and even taught gymnastics for a while! She showed us some of her moves! You still have it, Sister Ranson!
After the obstacle course, the message, and the refreshments... it was PLAY TIME!!!!!

More of Sister Ranson -- able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!

After the girls were worn out in the arena, Sister Billings took us to the clinic and patched up the cuts and bruises from the evening.

Sister Billings, WE LOVE YOU!! Thank you for helping to provide us with yet another memorable evening!

Our apologies to our very supportive parents for getting your girls home so late...

The Weekend is Approaching

Friday is almost here! Just another few hours! It's been an odd week. Not a bad one, exactly. I really can't put my finger on what's been a little off. Maybe a little too much time for introspection. I've just been in a bit of a funk off and on this week, feeling unappreciated by my kids and absent husband.

I had a minor meltdown today about it, then confronted my unprepared husband before he even set his laptop down this evening. I'm actually glad I did it because I've been slowly building over the last few days. I had been home from Joy School for 10 minutes, I had run to the bathroom and when I came downstairs Tanner had crushed Life Cereal from a snack bag that he had found in the car all over the carpet and kitchen. I knew Justin would be home any minute. I dragged out the broom and vacuum, but hadn't finished before Justin walked in the door. I immediately started crying. He asked me what on earth was wrong and I informed him that I was frustrated because he was angry at me because I let Tanner make the mess, and because I knew he was disappointed that the house wasn't in suitable condition for his triumphant return. He seemed genuinely bewildered, standing there in our doorway. We had a great talk, he comforted me, helped me fight the demons away and reassured me in believable words and tones that he does love and appreciate all that I do for our family. And that he does love my quirkiness and appreciate my eccentricities and passion. And Kinley assured me that I am "the very best mom in the world" and that I am "skinny enough." :)

The emotional disconnection that comes with tax season (however relatively mild this one might be) still creates distance if you aren't careful. And with enough distance, I have an extremely active imagination. All it takes (apparently) is one little 5-year old saying "Mommy, we NEVER have any fun" to send me into a tailspin. Especially when the child's father says we have way too MUCH fun and not enough downtime. Kind of lose-lose, and you start to hear the old familiar echos of "not good enough! Not good enough! You'll never be good enough! You can't win! No matter what you do, it will never be enough, never right!"

And I'm still struggling with my kids' total inability to entertain themselves. My sister meant well when she said, "well, maybe you haven't taught them to do that", but all I heard was "this is your fault." Yet another thing that is my fault.

This all came on pretty suddenly, as I've actually been in a remarkably positive place for many months now. And I do mean a GREAT place. I'll get over this funk very soon, and it came out of nowhere. I just felt in the interest of honesty to myself, I couldn't ignore it and just post the happy pictures I've been collecting this week. Maybe it's because I completely missed out entirely on the whole spiritual side of Easter this year. I've been kind of hovering around this place since the Sunday morning disaster. I could have used an uplifting message about the Savior's atonement, I'm thinking!!

Sometimes life is just hard. And sometimes it's hard for no reason. I am blessed beyond my wildest dreams. We are healthy, we are happy, we are gainfully employed, we have a fantastic ward, rewarding callings, friends who are dearer than we deserve, and families that we love. My kids are more than I ever could have dreamed, we're having adventures, the weather is improving, what is there to be so blue about? I feel very selfish for even feeling this way, which, LOL, doesn't exactly help the situation, ha ha ha! I just want my family to love me as much as I love them. And they insist they do. I just wish I had the capacity to believe them :)

Calling All Grocery Sacks

My neighbor Natalie is collecting shopping bags for a school recycling drive, in an attempt to help her son's kindergarten class win the coveted class party. If you have any plastic shopping bags you are willing and able to part with, please drop them off at my house or at her house today or tomorrow (Thursday)!

Kissable Face

I've been putting off making this page for ages because I wante just the right papers and layout for these adorable little pictures. I finally made some decisions on it today. It's not perfect, but it's done, and I like it.Credits: "Celebrate" freebie kit from Shabby Princess. Notebook paper from "Welcoming Spring" kit by Weeds and Wildflower Designs.

Easter Disasters

Well, there are no adorable Easter Sunday pix this year. This morning didn't go exactly as I had envisioned. We were clickin' right along, perfectly on schedule to make it to the church in time to get our favorite pew.

Then... I dressed Tanner. Did I mention that Tanner doesn't deal with change very well? Did I mention that I bought him some new Easter clothes? He screamed like a teradactyl for 35 minutes. I'm sure the neighbors thought we were plucking his feathers the way he carried on. By the time we made it out the door at 9:15, he was only mostly in control of his emotions and his face was puffy and his big brown eyes were bloodshot.

We got to church and he immediately started into high-pitched shrieking at the top of his lungs for crackers. Right there in the hallway. So... at 9:20 I left Justin and Kinley at the church and drove his Royal Screamyness home, where we could cry together without witnesses.

Then, of course, I forgot that Justin and Kinley didn't have a car at the church. So they had already started hoofing it home by the time I remembered I was supposed to pick them up. Sigh... but we're going to have a nice family dinner with the in-laws this evening, and the items I have prepared for dinner have turned out nicely (knock on wood).

Park Pix

I got obsessed making one final page before bed. Well, that, and I decided at the last minute that I needed to wash (shrink) Tanner's new Easter pants, so I've been waiting to throw them in the dryer. I've gotta start a jello salad in the morning before church, which means I can't wait until the last minute to drag my butt out of bed. Never Enough

Sometimes being a mother is pretty thankless.

A sentence that actually came out of Kinley's mouth this afternoon:

"Mommy, I never get to have any fun!"

Excuse me?

Ward Easter Activity

We went to the ward Easter activity after all. We tried to walk there, but after 3 time-consuming disasters, I gratefully hitched a ride with a passing neighbor half way to the chapel and we made it just in the nick of time. There was a very nice little program about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, aimed age-appropriately at the Primary children. Then there was a short wild egg hunt and some delicious rolls.

I can tell you that Shirley's cinnamon rolls are delicious! Alas, I can also tell you that her orange rolls and her strawberry rolls are equally yummy... don't judge.
The egg hunt was over very very very fast. Tanner wasn't able to get any eggs, but Kinley graciously shared hers. She was so disappointed with her meager take (5 eggs) until I informed her that Tanner wasn't able to get a single one. She somewhat reluctantly gave him one and then got into her usual generous spirit and ended up giving him almost all of them.
Speaking of disappointment, Tanner wasn't thrilled with what the activities committee chose to stuff in the eggs. As a mom, I appreciated the trinkets, but Tanner hucked them to the side and dug around until he found some with candy in them!
Then we hitched a ride home with another generous neighbor. I put the kids down for a nap and (obviously) spent the afternoon scrapbooking.
