To Temple Square!

It wouldn't be a family trip to Utah without a pilgrimage to Temple Square in Salt Lake City!
We spent the day touring the fountains, gardens, Conference Center, Tabernacle, Joseph Smith Memorial Building, and the museum.
The inseparable princesses.
We took a quick, kid-friendly tour through and above the Conference Center.
The grounds were beautiful...
We enjoyed a PBJ picnic lunch on the lawn.
Heather and I were pegged as sisters everywhere we went.  Even when we were separated at the pool or down different hallways during church, there were whisperings of "Sister B.'s sister is in town, isn't she?"  Some stranger at the rec center even asked if we were twins.  When we laughed and said that we weren't twins, she asked, "oh, are you neighbors?"  Because of course, if we aren't twins, we must be neighbors.... right???
Our kids know the drill!  Say, "cheese!"
Crew spent some time in his stroller...
But he mostly wanted to be out of it, like a big boy.  Fortunately for him, he was never lacking for other big boys willing to cart him around.
We toured the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

And of course we walked through both visitor's centers.  That's me holding a Latvian Book of Mormon and a Russian Book of Mormon.  I do hope that today's Latvian-speaking LDS missionaries know how lucky they are to have a Book of Mormon in their teaching language!  The Latvian Book of Mormon wasn't translated and printed until the year after I came home from my mission.
It was a wonderful trip to Temple Square!

After Four Long Years... a Reunion

My sister Heather and her 7 wonderful children came for a whirlwind week of family fun!

 Egads, it was fantastic.

The last time I saw my sister in person was when she stayed with us for a week to help out our family when Crew was in the NICU. The cousins, however, haven't seen each other since the summer of 2008.  Do the math, that's four years; they know each other only through vague memories, blogs, letters, and mommy gossip. But that didn't stop them from having the time of their lives!  We played hard for 9 amazing days.  How have we waited so long to do this???  Never. again.

Heather and I didn't get along very well when we were growing up (ok, that's a gross understatement that just made my parents raise their eyebrows), so it continues to surprise us how perfectly well we get along today and how eerily similar we are in temperament and parenting style.

To Justin's mortification, we were equally neurotic about photographically documenting every blessed minute of our adventures.

For this first installment of photos: the Homefront Fun.

The kids played and played and played and played.
Friendships blossomed.
Two little pen pal princesses discovered that they love each other just as much in person as they do through letters. (Honestly, Anna and Kinley are practically the same person in letters.  Same writing voice, same interests.  I laugh so hard whenever I am reading them because you can't distinguish one personality from the other!)
With a house full of guests (who all love Aunt Megan's food), I was never without assistance in the kitchen -- or anywhere else.  Justin's only complaint was the backed up tower of rinsed dishes that were always waiting to be run through the dishwasher. But as Heather said, "You know, we've pretty much been living like the Duggars for the last week and the Duggars have, like, 3 dishwashers. So I think we're doing pretty well!"  Amen to that!  It was so awesome to have so many capable and willing kitchen helpers.  One morning, 12-year old Julian made 45 pumpkin pancakes all by himself.  We ran a smoooooooth operation and many hands made light work!  Justin couldn't believe that our house was tidier with 13 people living in it than it is when it's just the 5 of us.  (I wasn't surprised.  Have you met my sister?)

Amber and Annabelle even volunteered to take a turn at our family's crappiest job.  Ahem.
The kids played hours upon hours of board/card games...
Tanner found willing competitors to play all the Wii games he wanted.
Pinging and ponging.
Crew found lots (and lots) of snuggles.  He enthusiastically welcomed his cousins and Auntie Heather into the family fold.  He was angelically well behaved for all but 25 demonic minutes of their visit.  He was much beloved by his fawning cousins... and aunt.
Happy, tired kids and a good night's sleep!
That's just some of the fun we had at the house!

What. A. Summer.

Holy moly, this has been one c-c-c-crazy summer!  Virginia, Park City, swim lessons, strep throat, major amoxicillin allergic reaction, 9-day visit with my sister's family, Youth Conference, Girls Camp, etc.

It's been a roller coaster, that's for sure!  So much to catch up on!

Swift Gals

For the Activity Days talent show, Kinley and her good friend Julie did an acapella singing and dancing routine to Taylor Swift's "You Belong with Me." Cartwheels and everything. So. awesome.

Bye Bye, Walker?

Mr. Independence returned his walker to the school district! Big day for us. Huuuuge day.

He bid his trusty little walker a fond farewell, complete with kisses.  "Bye, bye, walker!"
We returned it to Crew's Early Intervention PT, Julie.  He blew her away with his progress; she hasn't seen him since November.  She asked him at one point during our visit, "Crew, how old are you?"  She wasn't expecting an answer, but she sure got one!  By the way, Crew is "bee".  He'll be turning "fa" in November.
After some dismal previous experiences, Julie restored my faith in physical and occupational therapy.  I'll be forever grateful.
See ya later!  I'm outta here on my own two feet!

Independence

Crew is officially a full-time walking kid! We so rarely see him crawling anymore and it's wonderful. Barefoot, socks, footie pajamas, shoes, hard floors, carpet, uneven terrain, grass, asphalt, bark, cobblestones, sand, ankle-deep water, up/down hills.  You name it, he walks it.

Crew. has. arrived.

King of the Dragons

It is so exciting now that Crew is big enough to be fully incorporated into Big Kid Playtime.

Meet: a brave knight, a beautiful princess, and the King of the Dragons.

Daddy and Daughter Date

Daddy took The Princess on a Daddy-Daughter date with the other girls from Activity Days. They ate chicken alfredo for dinner and played games. Such a fun night!  Thanks, Daddy!

Memorial Day

The children have grown so much since Dex passed away.  And not just in the size of their hands.  They have great big hearts too.

This was the first time Little Brother was able to walk independently around the cemetery.  It was a vivid reminder of just how far our tiny prince has come in the last few months.

I love all my kids so much.
Miss you, Dex.

Le Petit Patriot

I had the pleasure of attending Tanner's patriotic kindergarten graduation program. It was such an impressive production! These kids were awesome. I had no idea that the kindergartener living under my roof could sing every word to "God Bless the USA", the "Star Spangled Banner", "Fifty Nifty" and many more.  I was seriously speechless (and that doesn't happen often/ever. Ahem.)

"This is Tanner.  His hero is his Dad because he makes him sandwiches, manwiches, and cereal."
Kissable kindergartener
I suppose you could call Tanner a "minimalist performer".
Miss C. was a really great teacher for Tanner.  We will miss her next year!
Just keepin' it real.  For posterity.
