Geographical Basketball

Kinley: If I ever play basketball on a team, I already have shorts, but I'll need a new jersey.

Tanner: Why, Kinley? Why do you need to go to New Jersey?

Boo Hoo Crew

I really hate Operation Fatness. This calorie-counting, baby-stuffing thing is sending us around the bend. We just finished our third day in a row of really disappointing intake for the pampered prince.

I feel twitchy.

You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that Operation Skinny Thighs might be starting at a very bad time. Stress, frustration, and anxiety make me hungry. In fact, the less Crew eats, the more I fantasize about sausage, egg, and cheese mcgriddles...

Grrrrr....

After a nice week of eating, the little emperor has just finished a second day in full food strike. 650 cals per day is... not even enough to maintain his weight.

Have I mentioned how much I hate counting calories for a baby???

When Art and Reality Collide

This is my favorite movie clip of all time.

I love you, Justin.

Snicker, snicker...

Off We Go

Having grow-critter food in the same house with shrink-mommy food just seems like I'm begging for failure.

I used the treadmill this morning. It was actually fun. What I love best about our new commitment to better health and fitness is that we have moved operations down to the basement. It was always so hard to exercise in the livingroom early in the morning, knowing I had a greater than 50% chance of waking up one of the children with my dancing elephant routine. Eventually it became impossible to convince myself it was worth the risk. And once the day is started, blah, blah, blah... then I'd eat a naughty breakfast followed by two naughty snacks, and then working out seemed pointless, blah blah blah... I did manage to squeeze out 28 days of the 30-day Shred with Jillian Michaels. I liked it a lot, had success with it, and we'll be doin' a little of that too.

What I love second best about it is that for the first time ever ever ever, Justin is on board to join me on the journey. In fact, he's driving this train. In addition to an unprecedented commitment to regular exercise, he's even promised to eat vegetables. It's always been so cruel to have to make a separate, fun-sucking meal for myself while Justin smacks his lips over a 4-pound plate of spaghetti loaded with meat and cheese. He's even been talking big about getting his hands on some P90X. I think that's a little ambitious, but we'll see. I know I'm not ready for P90X, so I can't imagine that he is. He thinks he's in better shape than me. I think he's delusional.

As for me, I've committed to never eat an entire bag of chicken nuggets by myself ever again.

So, off we go on our quest for increased energy and buckets of endorphins.

Waaaaaaaah!!

Let the Misery Begin

In the last few years, thanks to pregnancy, stress, and a cozy relationship with the fridge, I have started to feel like one of these. This week, Justin bought one of these.
So now I'll be eating some of these.
And doing a lot of this.
Can you feel the joy and commitment just oozing out of my pores?

Reading, Writing, and 'Rithmatic

Many of you know that I am a devoted promoter of our much beloved Yellow Book. The real title is "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and it was recommended to me years ago by my homeschooling sister, Heather. I used it with great success for Kinley (click on that link if you want to see a cute picture of itty bitty Kinley); she finished just as she started Kindergarten and now Tanner is almost half way through. A few of my friends have tried it in their homes and have reported their own happy, satisfied experiences. I often say that it would be better titled "Teach Your Child To Read For Dummies". All you do is read what is in pink and the child says what is in black. The lessons are each about 5-15 minutes long and when you finish, your child is reading on a second grade level. For realsies. The following is one of their final practice stories:

Hunting for Tigers -- Part 1
"The old man said, "I need a tiger coat. So I will hunt for a tiger."
The girl said, "But you can not see. How can you hunt for a tiger?"
The old man said, "I can hear. Tigers make sounds. I will hear those sounds and take a shot."
The girl said, "The show may miss."
"No, the old man said. When I hear something I will take a good shot."
So the man went out with his gun. He did not see well. So he fell over a log. Then he fell over a rock. Then he walked up a hill. When he got to the top he stopped. "I hear something," he said. "I have found a tiger."
The man did not hear the sound of a tiger. He was a big tiger: and it was very near. The old man picked up his gun. "Blam."
The shot did not hit the tiger. It hit a nut in a tree. The nut fell on a mouse.
The mouse yelled, "Stop hitting me with nuts."

Anyway, if anyone ever wants to give it a whirl, call or email me so that I can share with you a few simple items of advice that my sister offered to me and some that I have learned on my own journey. I love this book and will be forever grateful that it came into our lives when it did. It's a complete learning system stuffed in one innocent-looking little book and it's the best $15 I have ever spent.

Singapore Math
I have never had a comparable preschool age curriculum in the math department... until now. My other homeschooling sister, Courtney, directed me toward Singapore Math after I explained exactly what I was looking for. There are many different math options out there, but this is the perfect fit for our house.

Kerrin and I each bought our kids their own copies of Earlybird Kindergarten Math Textbook A and we use them in our tiny co-op preschool. We are absolutely giddy about them! We hope to dive into Book B before the year is out. They are designed for couch-teaching/snuggling and they also have additional development expansion ideas for each of the concept lessons. It is colorful and bright, meant to be written in. It is a textbook and a workbook. Plus, it gives you ideas for ways to build on the concept in hands-on ways, using simple household items. We love it, love it, love it! Did I mention that we love it?

Here is Tanner putting a sticker on a finished page.

It's taken ten years of marriage, but Justin and I are finally on the same page when it comes to educating our children. A few years ago we weren't even on the same planet, but we have now reached a compromise that satisfies both of us. I have agreed to send our kids to public school and Justin begrudgingly supports my obsession to supplement, kicking in cash for wacky curriculum every once in a while. It keeps the peace and we're both surprisingly satisfied with the balance we've found. It's worked out better than I would have imagined.

I. Just. Love. This. Kid.

Nice Knees

Check out that knee action. No, he's not crawling yet, but he is beginning to use those beautiful knees for leverage once in a while. He has even been known to pause over a bent knee now and then. Don't you just want to squeeze him? I would squeeze him myself, but he's sitting at my feet in a seriously stinky diaper. Yuck.

Fat Baby Update

We backed his calories down this past week from 1150 a day to 1000 per day. We figured he didn't need to gain 10 ounces every week and at 1150 cals per day, Crew was feeling like every meal was Thanksgiving Dinner. That can't be fun. I wouldn't even like that and I think we've pretty clearly established that I'm a glutton. He tolerates 1000 much better but it's still a stretch for him.

When we walked in the door of the pediatrician's office this morning, he warned me not to expect another 10 ounces. I didn't; I was hoping for 5 or 6. I didn't get that either.

Crew gained 2 ounces this week. Considering he had only gained 2 ounces in the previous 3 months, I'll take 2 ounces in a week and shut my mouth about it.

Crew will never be a fat baby. Too bad because apparently fat babies make for cute pictures with puppies. Oh, and we'll never have a puppy either.

Lunch Confessions

My name is Megan and I just love macaroni and cheese with chicken nuggets.

Super Sister Award

Once upon a time, I was really annoyed because I wasn't notified about an award ceremony at Kinley's school. From that bitterness was born the inspiration for The Super Sister Award. I decided that they weren't the only ones who could hand out awards around here. And furthermore, I didn't invite any of them to celebrate the achievement with us.

What?

Me? Issues? Nah...

So anyway...

I made up the Super Sister Award and Kinley has been diligently working on it for a few months. She finally finished everything and earned a trip to Claire's for new earrings!

The requirements for this prestigious award were:
  • Read 20 books to Tanner
  • Play 20 board games with Tanner
  • Bathe and dress Crew 5 times
  • 3 service projects of her choice (she chose to play with Crew and to help with his PT)
  • Babysit both boys 5 times for 30 minutes in the basement or the playroom without the aid of Wii or television
She did it!! I'm really proud of her! She earned new earrings and accomplished much good in our home. She truly is a SUPER SISTER!!

You Say Potato

You may call this a mess. I may call this a mess. Our Feeding Occupational Therapist calls it a "successful exercise in sensory exploration."

Julie brought in a new recruit to our team: Becca. We actually won't be seeing Becca very often because Crew is doing so well. She saw wonderful things while she was evaluating us over lunch. She also made me feel a lot better about my method of persuasion, letting me know that I'm not unduly coercive in my efforts to feed him and that "force feeding" is not an accurate description of what I'm doing. Phew! I've worried about that a lot.

We're settled into Operation Fatness. It's been a... transition, to say the least. We all pretty much hated life that first week; he and I were in tears almost the whole time. Justin, Kinley, and Tanner gave us a wide berth. It was emotionally draining and extremely time consuming. I thought I was losing. my. mind. I am still regularly pureeing in my nightmares, and my tracking spreadsheet is a neurotic marvel to behold, but things are better. Much better.

Balancing nutrition, fluid intake, maximum calories, nutritional variety, appealing taste, and workable textures; researching, brainstorming, planning his menu, preparing, measuring, mixing, remeasuring, dividing, calculating, pureeing, remeasuring, redividing, recalculating, feeding (ak!), remeasuring, recalculating, recording, and cleaning up are no longer the only things I do throughout the day. Did I mention the tears?

The good news is that we now know that he can grow. That means we can pretty much scratch metabolic and genetic disorders off our list. Oh, and Primary's... :)

Skeletal Collaboration

After reading Me and My Amazing Body together, Kinley and Tanner surprised me with a little collaboration on guts, creatively named "Tanner's Skelton". I think we may have future doctors in our midst! Or perhaps Halloween discount decor designers...

Scare of the Day

I let Crew and Tanner play in the playroom upstairs while I was busy preparing my preschool lesson this morning. Tanner played Wii and Crew dumped out toys from buckets, threw blocks across the room, and banged cupboards open and closed. The playroom door was supposed to be closed, but someone went potty and forgot to close the door again.

While I was cutting out an unflattering picture of a man's hairy nose for our body books, I realized that in my peripheral consciousness I was hearing happy little baby chatter much too loud, much too close.

I raced to the stairs and spied a very happy little baby teetering precariously on the brink of death or maiming.

Now, just imagine this picture without the protective arm of an older brother and with four more stairs that were cropped out of the picture, and you'll get a feel for why my heart is still racing.

Of Course

The good news: We think that Crew has chosen his first verbal word.

The bad news: It's "no". As in, "no, I'm not going to eat it".

Table Manners

After finishing her dinner this evening, Kinley let out a gigantic belch. A polite child probably wouldn't have done it in the first place; a less polite child would have said, "excuse me." My child said between fits of laughter:

"See how good dinner was? Even my body is saying 'thank you!'"

The Sunday Box

I loved all of the wonderfully creative suggestions for a successful Sunday Box and I have implemented almost all of them. Thank you! Thank you! In the end, I sacrificed a cabinet instead of a box. We now have a "Sunday Cabinet".

Some asked for a final report, so here it is. If it seems overly detailed, it is so that I may use it for my own reference later. The library is my bosom friend.

To start, I ran around the house and gathered many items that I already had.

Sunday Movies
First, I pulled all of our churchy movies off of shelves and out of boxes. The movies include:
Work and the Glory,
The Forgotten Carols
Praise to the Man,
The Testaments of One Fold and One Shepherd,
Christmas Oranges,
The Other Side of Heaven,
Stories of Christmas,
and Johnny Lingo.
Any of the Liken the Scripture movies or The Living Scripture animated series; checked out from the library

We may have to replace Legacy and Mountain of the Lord. I can't seem to find them at the moment; I think we only had them in VHS format and gave them away before the move. There are some other DVDs that interest me, most of which I can find at our local library. Some of these look interesting as well, perhaps as the children grow.

Games
Some of the games I chose are gospel related; others are just small and relatively quiet:
Book of Mormon Go Fish
Who Said? Book of Mormon Match Game
Our long-time favorite: Aye, Aye, Nephi (Thanks, Heather!)
Blink
Uno
SkipBo
Dominoes

Games I'd Like To Add Someday
It Came To Pass

Books
I haven't been buying as many books in recent years, as my love affair with the library has flourished. Nevertheless, I do have a few great ones in the box, as well as a large selection I can choose from the library as needed. The following list includes both:
How Does the Holy Ghost Make Me Feel?
The Parable of the Chocolate Chips
My Wedding Day
Any of the "My First" books.
Christmas books at Christmas time
Max Lucado books

Books I haven't read yet
White Shirts
An embarrassment of riches in the file folder department
Puzzles
Old Friend Magazines
Activities from Primary Partner's CD's
Coloring materials
Writing materials

**Suggestions for additions are very very welcome** It doesn't have to be available at Deseret Book or the LDS distribution center. I'm a sucker for any kind of family-oriented, feel-goody kind of movie or game, whether it's specifically gospel-related or not.

I dare say we may be having more fun on Sundays than any other day of the week. Wanna come party with us?

Such Naughtiness

Crew's new schtick is to pull off all the vent covers and drop toys down the chute. He tried to climb into one himself a few weeks ago and got stuck.

Little stinker.

Mobility rocks. So does cognitive development.

First Day of Preschool

I can't believe my handsome Tanner is so grown up. He indulged me for a few pictures of his first day of preschool at Kerrin's.

That Crazy Storm

The weatherman said that it dumped more in 15 minutes on Thursday than it usually does during the entire month of August. I believe it. It was pure craziness. It hailed too. A lot.

Preschool Portraits

We started preschool on Tuesday, a few weeks earlier than we had originally planned. We were all just too excited to get underway. Co-op preschool may not be the right choice for every child or every family, but it's definitely the perfect choice for us.

For our opening day, we learned about our bodies, so we colored life-sized self-portrait tracings. This is a portrait of my son... Luke Skywalker. After losing a bloody battle with Darth Vader. Please note the copious amounts of blue blood.
Now that I know how thorough Madison is as an artist, I will be very careful in choosing coloring projects. Next time perhaps something a little smaller.
It was a solid start to a new preschool year. No complaints.

Fat Baby

Thank you so much to those who have been praying for our little guy. It has definitely made a difference.

I have exhausted every bit of creativity and patience in the mommy-arsenal as I have pushed Crew to the limits of his abilities and desires. We have radically changed his diet in both variety and quantity. It has been extremely difficult for him and very stressful for us but we know we are doing the right thing by him.

I drove him to P-town this morning for a spontaneous voluntary weigh-in; I needed some sort of validation on our efforts. My nerves may be in tatters and my house in shambles, but my baby has gained 10 beautiful ounces in the last 7 days!

And that makes it all worth it.

The Cove

Last week we went with some friends to "feed the ducks". We overindulged one fat angry goose instead. Still a worthwhile excursion.

Max and Tanner are prepared to protect the galaxy from Trade Federation shenanigans.Mermaid Madison, waiting patiently for Prince Goose.
The angry, honking, hungry, entitled, spoiled, rotten goose.
Madison and Max fed the goose...
while Tanner fed himself.
Mmmmm.... snack time!
After we fed the goose, we took a walk amongst the ticks trees.

This should be an interesting year at preschool...
This is Kerrin, my co-op preschool partner in crime.
Crew enjoyed the fresh air, even though it was also very windy air.
Monsieur Lewis

Honk, honk.

Roommate Reunion Rundown

In the fall of 1993, some freshman acquaintances decided to shack up together off campus for the sophomore adventure of a lifetime! 17 years later, bonded for life...

Melissa, Monelle, and I brought our families together for an evening of food, fun, and reminiscing about our simple Belmont days of yore. I didn't own a camera during college, so when Melissa brought out her collection of photos, Justin got quite an eyeful! Why was I always perched on someone's lap? And wow, flannel really was my signature style, wasn't it?

I have a lot to say right now about each of the many inspiring and beautiful women that I was blessed to be crammed into tiny apartments with during my single years, but it's all mushy. Too mushy. I love you guys. Truly and deeply. Enough said.
